I would like to thank this month’s Daring Cooks host, Debyi (The Healthy Vegan Kitchen), for not only offering such a tasty challenge in Indian Dosas, but also for reassuring me that if I can’t make it as a Daring Cook (and my utter inability to produce a round dosa definitely points in that direction), I may have a very bright future in psychoanalysis.
In my hands, these thin Indian pancakes are better than inkblots, don’t you think? Feel free to interpret them any way you wish and to leave your interpretations in the comments. Also feel free to draw whatever conclusions you like about me from my own perceptions of my edible little Rorschach tests, but please keep these to yourself.
And if my career as an analyst doesn’t take off, there’s always recipe translation work. I have a natural talent for this. For example, it was quite effortless for me to translate “ladle 2 tablespoons of batter into your pan until it is a thin, round pancake,” into “plop 2 tablespoons of batter into the center of your pan and swirl the pan around until the pancake looks like something the cat dragged in.”

In any event, the good news is that, plumped up by curried garbanzo filling and doused with coconut curry sauce, dosas don’t have to be perfectly round to be perfectly delicious.

Exactly, food doesn’t have to look perfect to taste perfect. By the way, the first pancake reminded me of Kermit the Frog right away, is it serious? 🙂

Hilarious! What a great way to start my day. And we all know some things don’t have to looks great to taste great. A job well done!

LOL!!! This post was hilarious! I still think it turned out very well. The first plate looks great! Good job!

So…the recipe for the dosas AND the garbanzo filling AND the sauce?
My mouth is watering!

I love it! Glad to know they are so tasty too. I will be cooking mine up tonight.. better late than never! 🙂

hey, as long as they taste good, eh? But, my grandmother taught me to make them by put the full ladle down in the center of the pan and then drawing it like a reverse whirlpool outward. About halfway through refill ladle if necessary to get the size you need. You have to do this quick though otherwise the center cooks too much.

Susan,
you cracked me up! I agree with you that one pancake looked like a fat rat, maybe we would fit the same profile.
I am glad to hear that the recipe is a winner, I wanted to try it as well.

The fat rat is definitely my favorite! I think that I like your rosarch tests better than ANY completed challenge so far! HAHAHAHHA!!!!!!! Patience is my shortcoming, so any kind of “wait-till-you-flip” food always gets flipped well before it’s ready in my house.
Caitlin says
I totally looked at the rat one and thought – oh, a bunny! But a fat rat sounds funnier 🙂 And the last one looks like there’s a bird near the top peeking out of a treetop. But really, this is exactly why I’ve never made crepes – perfectionism in shaping would depress me every time. Once plated, though, they look absolutely marvelous!

It’s the artist in you — making creative crepes/pancakes. I would say it makes the whole meal very interesting as well as tasty.

You’re a clown. Lovely descriptions and on the African plate tectonics bit…hmm, I’m a Nigerian geologist who loves food. What shall I say but agree with you?
Wolf says
ROTFL, reminds me of how mine turned out.}:P
I guess I shouldn’t try making crepes either}:P

I am also chuckling at the thought of you alternating between plopping the batter in the pan and whipping out the camera to archive your masterpieces!
Dosas are yummy and the ones you made (rounded or not) are no exception.

My pancakes were irregular as well but looked pretty once folded. I’ll definitely be making them again because the fillings and sauce are dynamite! Your final product looks yummy!
